Zebras Cross River in West Bengal Monsoon Fog

by Clinton Heath

Thick, pale monsoon fog hangs low over the Chinsura River in West Bengal, softening the bright late afternoon light into a diffuse glow. A herd of zebras stands ankle-deep in the muddy water, their black-and-white stripes creating a sharp, rhythmic pattern against the gray-brown current. The animals move with stiff, alert tension, heads raised high as they navigate the slippery stones. In the immediate foreground, a weathered, moss-covered tree branch arches across the top of the view, framing the crossing within a natural rectangle. The water ripples around their hooves, disturbing the surface mist that rests on the riverbanks. The scene ends with the dark, wet flank of a lead zebra pressing against the churning foam near the center.
