Hippopotamus Surfacing at Dawn in Kerala

by Benjamin Levine

Muddy water ripples as a massive hippopotamus breaks the surface, its dark, wet skin glistening under the first rays of sunrise. The animal's eyes and nostrils emerge above the greenish-brown surface, surrounded by floating water hyacinths typical of Kerala's backwaters. Warm golden light reflects off the wet hide, against the cool gray tones of the overcast rainy season sky. Droplets slide from the thick skin, falling back into the calm water. The creature remains still, muscles taut beneath the slick surface, creating a moment of silent tension. Ripples spread outward from the snout, distorting the reflection of the distant mangrove trees along the riverbank.
