Polar Bear Crossing Snow Crust at Dusk Mist in at the edge of a reed bed in Canada

Polar Bear Crossing Snow Crust at Dusk Mist

by Drake Thornton

Thick white mist rests on the ground, obscuring the horizon where a faint orange glow from a distant town flickers against the twilight sky. A polar bear moves across a frozen surface of packed snow crust, its massive paws breaking the hard layer to reveal dark, wet earth beneath. Behind the animal, a trail of deep indentations marks its path through the early spring thaw. To the right, dry, brown reeds emerge from the mist, standing stiff against the cold air. The bear's fur appears matted and wet at the edges, reflecting the dim ambient light. Its shadow stretches long and soft across the uneven snow, ending near a cluster of frozen reed stalks that stand stark against the grey atmosphere.
