Trees in Roofless Tunisian Hammam Ruin

by Reginald Weaver

Soft, overcast light falls through the open roof of a ruined hammam in Tunisia, illuminating the interior where nature has reclaimed the space. Thick tree trunks rise directly from the center of the cracked parquet floor, their roots splitting the ancient tiles. The walls, stripped of plaster, reveal layers of brick and stone in warm earth tones. Green leaves cluster at the top of the frame, creating a natural archway that frames the decaying architecture below. Monsoon moisture stains the lower sections of the walls, darkening the stone against the brighter, dusty upper surfaces. Deep shadows pool in the corners, against the pale gray sky visible through the missing roof. A fallen tile rests near the base of the nearest trunk, its edge chipped and covered in fine dust.
