Rotted Velvet Staircase in São Paulo Hotel Ruin

by Max Clements

Honeyed evening light falls through the open stairwell of an abandoned hotel in São Paulo state, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended in the warm air. The staircase curves upward, its steps covered in a once-luxurious velvet carpet now reduced to frayed, brown threads and loose clumps. Thick shadows pool in the corners of the stone balustrades, against the golden glow that washes over the rotting fabric. Dry season air has left the exposed wood bare and brittle, while the open upper floor reveals the sky through missing roof sections. One shard of sunlight catches the edge of a torn carpet thread, highlighting the texture of decay against the smooth, dark stone of the banister.
