Winter Fireflies Over Cappadocia Rice Fields in from a frost-hushed ridgeline in Cappadocia

Winter Fireflies Over Cappadocia Rice Fields

by Joan Yoder

Silvery winter light washes a frost-hushed ridgeline in Cappadocia, where ground fog pools thickly in the low valleys between eroded rock formations. Below, an irrigated rice field reflects the dim predawn sky, its surface rippled by gentle currents. Tiny points of bioluminescence drift above the water, their soft amber glow contrasting against the cool blue and gray tones of the dead of winter. The rock formations rise steeply on the horizon, their porous textures softened by the encroaching mist. A cluster of fireflies hovers near the water's edge, their light barely piercing the heavy stillness of the cold night. at the edge is the faint reflection of a single glowing insect on the dark, glassy surface of the irrigation channel.
