Fireflies Swarm Inside Stone Chapel at Dusk

by Bailey Ortiz

Twilight dimness fills the interior of a weathered stone chapel in San Cristobal de las Casas during the wet season. Thousands of fireflies drift in a dense, glowing swarm near the high vaulted ceiling, their bioluminescent dots forming a soft, living canopy above the dark nave. Faint neon reflections from an unseen source outside wash over the rough, uneven stone floor, creating muted streaks of blue and green that rest against the golden insect light. Ancient walls, carved with visible erosion and moss patches, rise into shadowed arches. Tiny sparks hover near the crumbling altar, illuminating dust particles in the air. One reflection of a firefly glows on a wet stone step in the foreground.
