Fireflies Glow Among Autumn Sunflowers at Dusk in from a moonlit breakwater near St Petersburg

Fireflies Glow Among Autumn Sunflowers at Dusk

by Jo Harvey

Cobalt twilight washes over a field of tall, dry sunflowers standing near a stone breakwater. Golden heads of the plants bow slightly under the weight of peak autumn, their rough stalks rising into the deepening blue sky. A thin veil of ground mist rests on the soil, catching the faint light of emerging stars. Tiny points of amber fireflies flicker above the flower heads, moving in erratic, glowing clusters. The scene sits low against the horizon where the breakwater meets the dark water. The contrast between the organic gold of the dried petals and the cool blue of the evening air creates a sharp visual boundary. One firefly rests on the edge of a sunflower head, its light reflecting off the dew-covered surface.
