Fireflies in Twilight Among Tall Sunflowers in from a frost-hushed ridgeline near Mississauga

Fireflies in Twilight Among Tall Sunflowers

by Brett Fernandez

Cobalt twilight blankets a frost-hushed ridgeline near Mississauga where tall sunflowers stand motionless. Their heavy heads droop slightly, creating dark silhouettes against the deepening sky. Tiny points of amber light flicker and drift among the stalks, marking the emergence of fireflies from the field. Ground fog pools in the low valleys, softening the base of the plants into a gray, undulating mass. Above, the first stars pierce the darkening blue, adding clear vast, cold distance. The bioluminescent insects hover just above the flower tops, their warm glow contrasting sharply with the cool, metallic tones of the evening. A faint reflection of a single firefly glimmers on the dew-covered petal of a foreground sunflower.
