Fireflies and Giant Lanterns in Stone Chapel in inside a candlelit abbey nave in Alleppey

Fireflies and Giant Lanterns in Stone Chapel

by Joshua McClure

Soft twilight falls through the high arches of an abandoned stone chapel in Alleppey, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended in the nave. Hundreds of bioluminescent fireflies swarm in dense, glowing clusters around weathered stone pillars and carved altar remnants. Above the vaulted ceiling, a surreal canopy of oversized, glowing lanterns floats motionless, casting warm amber pools of light onto the rough masonry floor. The lanterns appear as tangible, giant spheres, their surfaces reflecting the soft, flickering glow of the insects below. Shadows stretch long across the uneven ground, blending with the golden hues of the twilight. One firefly rests on the edge of a cracked stone step, its light mirroring the distant glow of the floating orbs above.
