Fireflies Over Ruined Wall at Dawn in among terraced rice paddies in Bahamas

Fireflies Over Ruined Wall at Dawn

by Walter Lee

Soft overcast light diffuses across a crumbling limestone wall where midsummer fireflies drift in slow, glowing arcs. The rough, weathered surface of the stone shows patches of green moss and deep gray cracks, against the faint yellow-green bioluminescence of the insects. Beyond the wall, terraced rice paddies stretch into the distance, their flooded surfaces reflecting the heavy, dramatic clouds filling the sky. The low angle view emphasizes the height of the wall against the vast, moody horizon. Tiny droplets of moisture rest on the stone texture, glistening slightly in the dim predawn air. A cluster of fireflies hovers near a jagged edge of the masonry.
