Midnight Fireflies Over Irrigated Rice Fields Near Ahvaz

by Tanya Blankenship

Moonlight falls through a thick, pale mist hanging low over flooded rice paddies near Ahvaz. Rows of young green stalks rise from the dark, reflective water, their surfaces catching the faint silver glow. Hundreds of tiny amber lights blink rhythmically above the crop, drifting in the humid air. The water mirrors the scattered bioluminescence, doubling the points of light against the black soil. A cool, distant tone pervades the landscape as the mist softens the horizon. The nearest stalks stand sharp against the glowing blur, their wet leaves glistening with condensation under the pale sky.
