Fireflies Glow in Bamboo Under West Bengal Escarpment in beneath a wind-cut desert escarpment in West Bengal

Fireflies Glow in Bamboo Under West Bengal Escarpment

by Jerome Carroll

Fading blue light washes over a dense cluster of tall bamboo stalks rising beneath a jagged, wind-sculpted desert escarpment. Thin ground mist hovers inches above the damp earth, catching the soft glow of scattered fireflies. The insects appear as tiny, drifting points of yellow-green light against the deepening indigo of the sky. Bamboo leaves form a textured ceiling, their edges sharp against the fading light. The rock face looms in the background, its rough, eroded surface dark and imposing. A low angle view emphasizes the height of the stalks and the vast, empty space above. The distance between the organic greenery and the stark stone wall creates clear cold separation. One firefly rests on a lower leaf, its light reflecting briefly on the wet surface.
