Decaying Bandstand in Roofless Hammam Wyoming

by Celeste Newton

Rust streaks flow down the curved wrought-iron pillars of a bandstand that leans precariously inside a roofless stone structure in the Wyoming wilderness. The white stucco walls of the hammam are crumbling, exposing rough gray rock beneath the peeling surface. At midday, clear dry mountain light floods the open space, casting sharp, short shadows from the twisted metal beams. Pools of ground fog settle in the low corners of the stone floor, obscuring the base of the pillars. Dry grass and sagebrush push through cracks in the masonry, their muted greens against the silver-gray oxidation on the iron. The structure stands as a silent testament to nature slowly reclaiming the built environment.
