Rusted Grain Silos Winter Afternoon in in South Africa

Rusted Grain Silos Winter Afternoon

by Lois Horton

Orange rust streaks the corrugated metal skin of three towering grain silos standing in a South African winter field. Late afternoon light reflects off a nearby body of water, casting a cool, shimmering glow against the warm, corroded surfaces. Heavy iron ladders climb the silo sides, their rungs eaten away by decay and left useless. The sky above is a pale, clear blue, against the muted browns and grays of the dormant grass below. Converging lines of the silo bases and the water's edge pull toward a distant vanishing point. A final streak of deep orange rust runs vertically down the nearest silo, marking the path of water that once flowed freely.
