Silhouetted Sandhill Crane in Volcanic Sand
by Hugo Decker
Soft, diffused light falls through a thick mist hovering just above a glacial stream near San Marcos, Quito. A sandhill crane stands in profile against the bright, hazy background, its form rendered as a dark silhouette. The bird walks across dark, loose volcanic sand, leaving a distinct trail of three-toed tracks that fade into the wet ground. Late spring moisture rests on the air, softening the edges of distant vegetation and blending the stream's silver surface with the gray sky. The wind lifts the crane's long neck feathers slightly as it moves steadily forward. Behind the bird, the tracks stretch back across the textured, grainy terrain, marking the path through the quiet, water-logged landscape. at the edge is the sharp contrast between the bird's black outline and the pale, glowing mist.
