Moonlit Glacier River Winding Through Black Volcanic Sand

by Brooklyn Kramer

Clear late-afternoon light illuminates a winding glacier river cutting through a field of black volcanic sand near La Ronda, Quito. The water appears pale and opaque, carrying a heavy load of glacial silt that contrasts sharply with the dark, granular earth. Low-hanging clouds drift just above the terrain, casting soft, diffuse shadows across the undulating landscape. The river bends in a gentle curve, following the rule of thirds composition as it flows over the rough, matte surface of the ash. In late spring, the air remains dry and still, showing the weathered texture of the volcanic rock. The water's edge blurs slightly where it meets the sand, leaving a fine line of wetness that darkens the grains even further.
