Sea Pen Colony Swaying in Clear Deep Water in beside a volcanic drop-off near Marseille

Sea Pen Colony Swaying in Clear Deep Water

by Gregory Stark

Sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear water, illuminating a dense colony of sea pens anchored against a dark volcanic drop-off near Marseille. The bioluminescent orange and pale pink stalks sway gently in the slow-moving current, their feathery polyps extending outward like delicate plumes. Shadows stretch across the rocky seabed where the mountain light falls through the surface ripples. The water remains glassy, preserving the sharp edges of the volcanic stone. Individual polyps cluster tightly along the central stems, creating a textured forest that moves in unison. One frond catches the light at the edge of the frame, revealing its translucent, fibrous structure.
