Coral Spawning Under Reef Ledge Night in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Stone Town

Coral Spawning Under Reef Ledge Night

by Beatrice Klein

Deep shadow envelopes the underside of a jagged limestone reef ledge, where faint rim light traces the rough, porous edges of the rock against the dark water. Thousands of translucent, milky-white egg bundles drift upward in slow, weightless spirals, suspended in the exceptionally clear turquoise shallows. Tiny specks of light reflect off the gentle surface ripples above, creating a subtle shimmer that fades into the blackness below. The water remains perfectly still, allowing the delicate gametes to ascend without disturbance. Fine sediment particles float in the current near the rocky floor, catching the minimal ambient glow. The scene ends with a cluster of bundles pausing mid-ascent, their soft edges blurring slightly against the dark backdrop.
