Permafrost Ice Wedge Cliff at Nautical Dawn in across a floodplain after rain in Northwest Territories

Permafrost Ice Wedge Cliff at Nautical Dawn

by Carl Rocha

Misty gray light softens the vertical face of a permafrost cliff, revealing distinct layers of blue-white ice wedges embedded within dark sediment. The exposed strata stand stark against the low-hanging clouds that drape the horizon. Below, the floodplain stretches flat and wet, reflecting the pale sky in shallow pools left by the early spring thaw. Rain has recently settled, leaving the ground saturated and glistening under the diffused dawn glow. The cliff surface appears rough and fractured, with water trickling slowly down the ice channels. A thin layer of mud rests on the base of the ice, marking the boundary between the frozen earth and the melting floodplain. The edge of a dark rock rests on the muddy bank in the foreground.
