Frozen Wave Curl Dawn Yellowknife Floodplain in across a floodplain after rain near Yellowknife

Frozen Wave Curl Dawn Yellowknife Floodplain

by Asher Lamb

Mist clings to a massive sheet of ice where a wave froze mid-curl during the early spring thaw. The translucent blue structure dominates the foreground, its surface rough with frost and layered with sediment from the recent flood. Soft, diffused dawn light falls through low-hanging clouds, casting a pale gray glow across the flat, wet floodplain. Behind the ice sculpture, the ground remains saturated and muddy, reflecting the overcast sky. A jagged edge of the frozen water curves sharply upward, holding its shape against the stillness. The texture shifts from smooth, glassy ice on the crest to granular, snow-dusted surfaces lower down, where the water once rushed before freezing in the cold air.
