Frozen River Pressure Ridges Under Noon Light in from a ridge above layered foothills in Canada

Frozen River Pressure Ridges Under Noon Light

by Michaela Rowe

Ice sheets fracture into jagged pressure ridges that stack several feet high along the river channel. The frozen surface displays a palette of slate grays and translucent blues where the ice has thickened. Flat noon light washes over the landscape, eliminating deep shadows and revealing the rough, granular texture of compacted snow atop the ridges. Below the viewing ridge, layered foothills stretch into the distance, their contours softened by a thin veil of moisture from recent rain. The sky above is a uniform, pale blue, perfectly clear and devoid of clouds. Water pools in depressions between the ice blocks, reflecting the bright overhead sky. A sharp edge of broken ice sits in the immediate foreground, its surface glistening with a thin film of meltwater.
