Cracked Ice Dawn Shore Yellowknife Spring Thaw
by Phyllis Best
Cold silver dawn light spills across a vast sheet of ice along the wave-cut shoreline near Yellowknife. Deep, jagged cracks fracture the frozen surface, creating a network of dark fissures against the pale, chalky white of the ice. Low-hanging clouds hang heavy above, their gray tones reflected perfectly in the shallow meltwater pooling within the fractures. The water mirrors the fractured ice above, doubling the visual complexity. Textures range from smooth, glassy ice to rough, snow-dusted ridges where the wind has sculpted the surface. In the early spring thaw, the edges of the cracks glisten with a thin layer of moisture. One dark shadow stretches across the foreground, showing the low angle of the rising sun. The horizon line blends seamlessly with the water, creating a continuous plane of gray and white. At the edge, a small, dark pebble rests half-submerged in the meltwater.
