Penstock Intake Spray and Hazard Paint Al-Fashir

by Wade Richard

Bright orange hazard stripes blaze against the dark, wet concrete of a massive penstock intake structure rising above churning water. Turbulent monsoon flow crashes against the base, sending sheets of white spray whipping sideways in the wind. The midmorning sun cuts sharp, clear lines across the wet surfaces, highlighting the texture of the rough concrete and the smooth, painted metal. Water droplets hang suspended in the air, catching the light before splashing back into the turbulent river below. Heavy steel grates screen the intake opening, their grid pattern distorted by the rushing water. The low angle emphasizes the scale of the engineering against the chaotic flow. One droplet rests on the edge of a metal strut, refracting the sky.
