Storm Barrier Along Afghan Estuary at Golden Hour in along a levee path above floodwater in Afghanistan

Storm Barrier Along Afghan Estuary at Golden Hour

by Alexandria Carpenter

Golden evening light floods the windswept estuary, illuminating a massive concrete storm surge barrier rising from churning floodwaters. The structure dominates the right third of the view, its smooth gray face against the chaotic, dark ripples below. Above the levee path, dry grasses bend sharply to the left, whipping in the strong current of air. The sky holds a gradient of honeyed orange near the horizon, fading into deepening blue above the barrier's flat top. Dust swirls near the base where water meets the engineered wall. Along the edge of the concrete, a thin line of white foam marks the relentless force of the surge, catching the last warm rays before twilight.
