Fiji Storm Surge Barrier Pumping Station Stairwell in beside a storm surge barrier in Fiji

Fiji Storm Surge Barrier Pumping Station Stairwell

by Nancy Bonilla

Bright late-afternoon sunlight cuts across the concrete stairwell of a pumping station built alongside a massive storm surge barrier in Fiji. Heavy industrial motors line the lower landing, their metallic surfaces gleaming under the harsh engineering daylight. Rain-slicked steel railings reflect the gray sky while wind whips loose plastic sheeting against the wall. The wide panoramic view reveals the immense scale of the structure against the wet tropical landscape. Green palm fronds bend sharply in the gale at the edge of the concrete foundation. Deep shadows pool beneath the heavy machinery, showing the raw texture of weathered concrete and rusted bolts. One puddle near the base reflects the angular geometry of the overhead catwalks.
