Soft overcast light fills the concrete stairwell of a pumping station beside a storm surge barrier in Maharashtra. Humid air rests on the wet surfaces, darkening the gray steps and reflecting the pale sky. Rust streaks run vertically down the steel handrails, against the fresh green moss growing in the crevices. The heavy industrial machinery hums silently in the background, its metal casing gleaming with moisture. One overhead fluorescent tube casts a cool, even glow that does not penetrate the deep shadows beneath the landing. Water droplets hang from the corrugated roof edge, poised to fall onto the slick concrete floor where puddles mirror the structural beams above. at the edge is a rusted bolt on the stair railing, its texture rough against the smooth, wet steel.
