Ocean Doorway in Abandoned Andean Hotel Ruin in inside a roofless nave near Quito

Ocean Doorway in Abandoned Andean Hotel Ruin

by Randall Whitfield

Bright late afternoon light floods the roofless nave of a crumbling stone hotel near Quito. Damp air hangs heavy among the rough-hewn walls, condensing on the grey masonry where shutters hang askew, battered by an unseen wind. The architecture shows signs of seasonal transition, with moss creeping over weathered bricks and dust settling on broken floorboards. In a stark violation of physical logic, a rectangular doorway cut into the western wall opens directly onto a churning open ocean. Waves crash against the interior stone threshold, splashing salt water onto the dry, dusty floor. The water's surface reflects the clear sky, contrasting sharply with the decay of the interior. One shutter rests on the wet stone near the waterline, its paint peeling in long strips.
