Abandoned Monsoon Station Among Ruined Cloisters

by Darren Adams

Soft overcast light falls through the broken stone arches of an abandoned tunnel station near Maroua. Ankle-deep water pools across the cracked concrete floor, reflecting the muted gray sky above. Faded posters cling to damp brick walls, their colors bleeding into the surrounding grime. The frame within a frame created by the remaining archway draws toward the receding darkness of the tunnel. Moss and algae coat the lower stones, signaling the trapped damp air of the monsoon season. Peeling paint curls from the doorframe, revealing the rough masonry beneath. One poster corner flutters slightly, caught on a jagged shard of broken glass embedded in the wet pavement.
