Derelict Japanese Barracks with Cots in Amber Light in along a derelict bunk room open to rain and wind in Japan

Derelict Japanese Barracks with Cots in Amber Light

by Hana Fleming

Rich amber sunset light floods a decaying bunk room along the Japanese coast, filtering through broken window frames to illuminate rows of rusted metal cots. Rain streaks the floorboards, creating a slick sheen that reflects the copper-toned glow. Weathered tatami mats lie torn and scattered near the walls, their fibers frayed by months of wind. Moss creeps up the base of the peeling paint, softening the hard angles of the structural beams. The open roof reveals a sky heavy with early spring clouds, casting shifting shadows across the empty bunks. Dust motes float in the shafts of light, settling on the cold steel of the cot frames. One rusted hinge hangs from a doorframe, its metal flaking under the damp air.
