Uphill Water Flowing on Shale Cliff in Quito
by Carla Warner
Golden autumn light reflects off a pool of water resting atop a steep shale cliff within the historic district of Quito. The dark, layered rock face displays intricate fossil patterns and erosion marks, rising sharply against low-hanging grey clouds. Instead of cascading downward, a ribbon of clear water climbs the inclined stone surface, defying gravity as it moves upward toward the ridge. The liquid gathers in a still, glassy basin at the highest point of the rock formation. Surrounding the cliff is expansive negative space where the sky meets the urban rooftops of the historic center. The water surface mirrors the pale evening sky, creating a seamless transition between the liquid and the air. A sharp, crisp edge defines the boundary where the uphill stream meets the rough, fossil-studded stone.
