Ocean Doorway in Jacksonville Alley Night in outside a fluorescent convenience store in Jacksonville

Ocean Doorway in Jacksonville Alley Night

by Cindy Wooten

Silvery winter light floods a concrete back alley outside a fluorescent convenience store in Jacksonville. A wet puddle in the foreground mirrors a sliver of dramatic, cloud-choked sky. At the dead end, a solid brick wall features a rectangular opening that reveals the churning, deep blue surface of the open ocean instead of darkness. Waves crash against the interior of the alley floor, merging with the puddle's reflection. A rusted metal doorframe frames the aquatic void, while the wet concrete reflects the surreal horizon in high contrast. The impossible waterway cuts through the urban texture, creating a sharp boundary between the gritty brickwork and the vast, restless sea. one drop of water rolls down the rusted frame, falling onto the wet pavement below.
