Iridescent Polar Cloud Before Sunrise in Canadian Fog in through low marine fog in Canada

Iridescent Polar Cloud Before Sunrise in Canadian Fog

by Jennifer Cameron

Thick marine mist rests on the low horizon, obscuring the ground and blending the sea with the sky. Above this gray veil, a polar stratospheric cloud glows with shifting mother-of-pearl bands of violet, soft green, and pale pink. The first rays of sunrise strike the upper edge of the formation, igniting the ice crystals within. The light creates a stark contrast against the cool, shadowed fog below. Delicate layers of vapor stack horizontally, their edges sharp yet soft. A thin streak of deeper blue cuts through the iridescence near the top, at the base of the ethereal colors in the vastness of the arctic summer sky.
