Meerkat Family Sentinel on Mound in Windhoek
by Jordan Marsh
Four meerkats stand upright on a reddish-brown earthen mound under the crisp, high-altitude light of a clear late afternoon. Their sandy fur blends with the dry soil, while the wet season leaves patches of green grass sprouting around the base of the mound. The family forms a tight vertical line, heads tilted toward the horizon where a soft, distant haze settles low against the sky. Behind them, the flat landscape of Windhoek stretches out with scattered low buildings and dry scrub visible in the background. The meerkats cast sharp, dark shadows that fall directly beneath their feet, anchoring them to the ground. One adult stands slightly apart, its dark eyes fixed forward while the smaller ones cluster closer together. The negative space above and around the group emphasizes their small scale against the vast, hazy sky.
