Meerkat Family Sentinel on Mound Near Gaborone
by Candace Ray
Late afternoon light falls through a thin layer of fog hovering just above the dry earth near Gaborone. A family of meerkats stands in a tight cluster atop a raised earthen mound, their small dark eyes scanning the horizon. The fur ranges from sandy beige to charcoal grey, textured by the low sun that casts long, soft shadows stretching across the sparse grass. Behind them, the landscape dissolves into a pale, hazy white where the sky meets the distant flatlands. The fog softens the edges of the scrub brush, creating a muted palette of ochre and grey. One meerkat perches on the highest point of the mound, its silhouette sharp against the bright, diffused sky. at the edge is the wet patch of soil at the base of the mound where the fog has settled into dew.
