Meerkat Guard on Windhoek Ridge Sunset

Wet, reddish dust coats the wind-scoured ridge near Windhoek, glistening where monsoon rains recently soaked the earth. A meerkat stands rigid on hind legs, its dark eyes fixed on the horizon as the sun dips low. The last light before nightfall casts long, sharp shadows across the dry scrub and scattered stones. Humid air hangs heavy, making the fur along the animal's spine appear slightly matted and darker. Its front paws grip the uneven ground, claws visible against the loose soil. The low angle emphasizes the creature's height against the fading sky. one drop of water rests on the tip of its twitching nose.
