Meerkat Family Sentinel on Gaborone Mound at Dawn
by Neil Kirby
Pale silver dawn light washes over a dry, reddish-brown earth mound in Gaborone, illuminating a cluster of meerkats standing upright in a loose formation. Their slender bodies cast long, soft shadows stretching westward across the scrubby grass. The animals display coarse fur in shades of tan and grey, with dark bands around their eyes that catch the faint morning glow. Behind them, the horizon blends low scrub with the distant, hazy silhouette of the city skyline under a pale, overcast sky. The cool season air leaves the ground dry and dusty, while the warm coastal breeze seems to ruffle the tips of the sparse vegetation. One meerkat stands slightly apart, its head tilted upward, scanning the empty sky with stillness. The composition places the group along the right vertical third, leaving open space to the left that emphasizes the vastness of the early morning landscape.
