Aardvark Emerging from Burrow Dusk New Zealand

by Macy Baird

Cool blue twilight washes over a grassy bank beside a glacial stream in New Zealand. Rain falls as a fine mist, coating the dark soil and wet stones with a sheen. An aardvark pushes its snout out of a burrow entrance, its coarse grey fur damp and heavy. The animal stands low to the ground, ears perked, eyes fixed on the water's edge. Steam rises faintly from the icy stream surface, against the cold air. Moss rests on the rocks lining the channel, turning emerald under the dim light. The creature's claws grip the mud, poised in a moment of stillness before movement. Water droplets slide from its whiskers onto the wet earth below.
