Silhouetted Tapir at Goa Jungle River Edge in at the edge of a reed bed in Goa

Silhouetted Tapir at Goa Jungle River Edge

by Frank Thornton

Bright midmorning sun floods the edge of a reed bed in Goa, casting the Indian tapir into a sharp, dark silhouette against the glare. The animal stands still in shallow water, its bulky form defined only by the outline of its snout and rounded ears. Tall, dry reeds rise around its legs, their beige stalks catching the harsh light while the water below reflects the sky. A low haze lingers on the distant horizon, softening the background jungle into a pale, washed-out layer. The tapir's posture is rigid and alert, head lifted slightly above the reeds. One water droplet rests on the tip of a nearby blade of grass, hanging motionless in the still air.
