Striped Hyena Silhouette at Queensland Dawn
by Shawn Stark
Mud flats glisten under the first horizontal rays of sunrise, their wet surfaces reflecting the pale gold and soft violet sky. A striped hyena moves across the textured ground, its dark form rendered as a sharp silhouette against the brightening horizon. The animal's distinct banding pattern is barely visible as a subtle variation in the shadow, while its ears swivel against the side wind. In the distance, a flock of birds erupts from the mud, their small shapes scattering into the morning light. Humid air hangs heavy over the scene, suggested by the way the light diffuses softly around the distant figures. The foreground mud shows deep, water-filled ripples left by the receding tide, anchoring the creature in its damp, coastal environment.
