Giant Sequoia Trunk Fire Scars Winter Noon in on a fern-lined forest floor near Lashkar Gah

Giant Sequoia Trunk Fire Scars Winter Noon

by Riley Porter

Deep charcoal and rust-colored fire scars carve vertical paths down the massive, reddish-brown bark of a sequoia trunk. The wood texture appears rough and deeply furrowed, against the pale, flaky patches of surviving bark. Below, a carpet of green ferns spreads across the forest floor, their fronds sharp against the dry, brown leaf litter of winter. Above, the sky holds a blanket of dramatic, heavy clouds that diffuse the harsh noon light, casting soft, even shadows across the bark. The trunk rises steeply on the left, anchoring the frame while the open sky dominates the upper right corner. A small cluster of dried fern tips rests against the base of the tree, caught in the flat, bright glare.
