Staghorn Fern on Rainforest Trunk at Dawn in in Sri Lanka

Staghorn Fern on Rainforest Trunk at Dawn

by Esteban Ramos

Deep shadow swallows the lower trunk of a massive rainforest tree, while a sharp rim of pale dawn light defines the upper curve against the mist. A staghorn fern anchors itself to the rough, wet bark, its antler-like fronds unfurling in layered clusters of deep olive and muted green. Rain-slicked surfaces glisten with a thin sheen of moisture, reflecting the soft, gray-blue sky filtering through the canopy above. The air hangs heavy and still, visible as a faint haze clinging to the textured wood and waxy leaves. Droplets rest precariously on the fern's ridges, catching the faintest glimmer of the rising sun. At the base, the rough texture of the bark meets the smooth, undulating edge of the epiphyte in a quiet, organic union.
