Twisted Cedar Tree in Late Afternoon Light in on a fern-lined forest floor near Belfast

Twisted Cedar Tree in Late Afternoon Light

by Hugo Hodges

Bright late-afternoon sunlight floods a forest floor near Belfast, illuminating a cedar tree bent sharply to one side by persistent coastal winds. The trunk, thick and deeply furrowed, leans heavily against the rule of thirds line, its branches swept back into a permanent wind-sculpted shape. Ferns carpet the ground in vibrant emerald hues, their fronds catching the sharp, tropical intensity of the clear sky. Dry leaves scatter across the damp earth, evidence of the recent storm that has just passed. Shadows stretch long and dark beneath the tree, at the base of the solitary figure in the vast, quiet landscape. One sunlit frond rests against the rough bark.
