Snorkeler Above Garden Eels Before Sunrise in beside a volcanic drop-off near Salvador

Snorkeler Above Garden Eels Before Sunrise

by Isabel Hensley

Pale morning light pierces the water, illuminating a field of garden eels swaying in unison against the dark volcanic drop-off. A snorkeler hovers just above the sandy floor, their mask reflecting the dim blue depths. Tiny plankton particles drift in the current, softening the background into a hazy gradient of slate and indigo. The eels rise from their burrows like slender, translucent reeds, their bodies striped in subtle bands of orange and white. The water holds a stillness, broken only by the gentle undulation of the creatures below. The snorkeler's fins remain motionless, suspended in the cool, clear column of water. One beam of sunlight catches the edge of a gill mask, glowing faintly against the deep blue.
