Rainbow Light Shafts Over Belize Reef

by Imani Lawson

Brilliant shafts of refracted sunlight pierce the shallow turquoise water, painting the sandy reef floor with shifting bands of violet, blue, and green. The light originates from the hard coastal glare of midday, slicing through clear water where suspended particles glitter like scattered diamonds in the rain-soaked current. A dark crevice in the coral formation anchors the scene, casting a cool shadow that contrasts with the bright, dancing beams. The water column remains still, holding the colorful projections steady against the textured seabed. Tiny specks of sediment float in the airless space, catching the edges of the spectrum. The final beam ends abruptly on a cluster of pale coral fragments.
