Moray Eel Emerging from Reef Crevice Belize

by Lynn Burke

Mottled gray and tan scales of a moray eel emerge from a jagged limestone crevice in the reef. The creature's head and upper body stretch forward into the clear tropical water, its mouth slightly open to reveal rows of sharp teeth. Sunlight falls through the surface above, casting shimmering, dancing patterns of light across the eel's skin and the surrounding rock. Tiny suspended particles glitter in the water column, catching the late afternoon rays like scattered diamonds. The scene is dominated by deep ocean blues and the warm, golden highlights of the sunbeams. Rough, porous textures of the coral rock contrast with the smooth, wet sheen of the eel's body. A final glint of light reflects off a single scale near the creature's gill slit.
