Gansu Colonial Barracks Ruin Evening Light in inside a barracks hall with broken windows and drifting dust in Gansu

Gansu Colonial Barracks Ruin Evening Light

by Anna Brooks

Dim blue twilight fills the interior of a crumbling colonial barracks in Gansu, where waist-high weeds spill through broken windows onto the floor. Dust particles drift slowly in the shafts of fading evening light that cut through the shattered glass. Flickering interior lamps cast warm, amber pools against the cool gray stone walls, highlighting cracks and peeling plaster. Shadows stretch long and quiet along the baseboards, creating deep recesses in the corners. The rough texture of the decaying brick contrasts with the soft, swaying green stalks of the weeds. A final beam of light strikes a patch of dried moss on the window sill, ending the view in a sharp edge of color against the darkening room.
