Flooded Boiler Room Ruins in Kano Wet Season

by Lily Turner

Soft overcast light falls through the open shell of a ruined boiler room, casting the interior machinery into deep silhouette against the bright morning sky. Black water pools at the base, mirroring the fragmented faces of broken gauges that hang suspended above the surface. Peeling layers of faded warning paint curl from the rusted metal walls, revealing the decay beneath. Outside, toppled stone columns lie scattered among thick green nettles that have crept up from the wet earth. A thin layer of ground fog rests in the low corners of the structure, hovering just above the dark water line. The jagged edge of a broken pipe cuts a sharp shadow across the still, oily surface of the flood.
