Abandoned Sugar Mill Chimney Amid Tangled Cane Ruins

by Shannon Eaton

Soft, diffused light from a heavy overcast sky washes over a crumbling brick chimney rising from a field of tangled, dried sugarcane. The structure stands tall amidst toppled stone columns and a carpet of stinging nettles that choke the base of the ruin. The turn of seasons colors the landscape in muted browns and fading greens, with the stiff stalks of the cane reaching toward the gray horizon. Weathered mortar crumbles from the chimney's face, revealing the red clay beneath. Broken masonry lies scattered across the uneven ground, partially buried by the encroaching vegetation. A patch of pale sky peeks through the dense cloud cover above the jagged top of the stack, casting a flat, shadowless illumination across the decaying industrial site. at the edge is a single, dry cane stalk leaning against a fractured stone block.
