Yellow Broom Blooms in Roofless Changsha Fort Ruin

by Paige Berry

Early autumn sunlight falls through sparse canopy leaves, casting dappled patterns across weathered stone walls inside a roofless nave near Changsha. Vibrant yellow broom plants spill over crumbling parapets, their bright clusters contrasting with gray masonry. Low ground fog pools in the hollows of the floor, softening the base of thick pillars. Moss clings to damp crevices where the stone meets the earth. The late afternoon light highlights rough textures of eroded brick and the delicate, clustered stems of the wildflowers. Shadows stretch long across the uneven ground, ending at the base of a fractured column where a single stone rests against a patch of pale mist.
